An abundance of programs and tools are available for small business and non-profit endeavors, covering everything from accounting needs to communication and website position tracking. As a web site developer, business person, and individual involved in non-commercial projects, I have had the privilege of testing and using many of the programs and tools available on the internet. Demonstration versions of these programs are available online and I would encourage you to test them for suitability.

3S from Clarisys is my first choice for a fully integrated accounting software package. 3S can be used by a wide variety of businesses, but is ideal for service type businesses. 3S is not, however, designed specifically for service industries. The invoicing module can be easily used by a distribution type business that does not wish to control its inventory. 3S includes: General Ledger, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable and Invoicing. Distributed free of charge, 3S is one of a complete line of accounting software products by the Canadian based Clarisys.
CheckMate Plus , by CTech, is easy to use and examples are provided for reference. It does not adhere to strict accounting policies, but this will be welcomed by folks who would like to be able to easily correct any data entry mistakes made. Distributed as low cost shareware, customers are on the honor system to pay the shareware fee. CheckMate is well worth the time to determine if it is suitable for your needs.
Timeclock. Tracking time spent on projects is particularly important for any service oriented business. Timeclock, written by Mike Parker, is an excellent time tracking software program that sits on the computer desktop. The convenient access of this easy to use program ensures that you'll not forget to record time spent on any project or activity.
Soft-It. I have tested several software programs for products and services invoicing, inventory management, and related statements and reports. Without a doubt, Soft-It's Instant Invoices is far superior to the other available programs of this type and at a fraction of the cost of most. Instant Invoices is ideal for businesses that offer services for hire as well as or instead of products. It facilitates rapid creation, storage, and retrieval of quotes for services and products and these quotes can be converted to invoices with a single click of a mouse button. The program is intuitive and clear menu choices make it simple to use regardless of the user's accounting or business background.
E-mail software.
Eudora. If you're looking for a full featured stand alone email program, I'd recommend Eudora Lite v.3 (freeware) and the professional version Eudora Pro v.3. Features comparison charts for the MAC and PC versions are provided at the Eudora site.
WorldMerge is a Windows-based electronic mail merge software program that allows you to send customized e-mail messages to a large number of recipients with the click of a button. Excellent tool for keeping in touch with customers or site visiters. WorldMerge is available in a 16-bit application for Windows 3.1 and a 32-bit version for Windows 95/Windows NT version. Note that installing the 32-bit trial version will cause the 16-bit trial version to expire.
Site tracking.
RankThis is a free online tool that allows tracking of site position in several major search engines and directories.
WebPosition, the highly rated and promoted software tool, will allow you to analyze multiple site positions in the Top 10 search engines and show you how to improve them to get more traffic.
